Qui sera là ? Novasteel

We're all familiar with fiber arts, maybe you can tell us a little bit about what it's like to create things out of metal.

Stainless Steel is one of the most difficult metals to work with, because it is so hard. Also, you have to get it right first time, if you make a mistake, you are stuck with it. The benefit is that once you have made something beautiful it will last forever.

The shawl pin is both simple in form and simple to use. Do you ever run into trouble when coming up with a new design? Have you experimented with the basic mechanics at all?

We are always working on different designs, but it is only at the prototype stage that I am able to test the functionality. I like to make sure that the pin is easy to attach, remove and that it will work with different types of shawl from delicate laceweight to chunky cables. Our new range for this summer use magnets to hold the fabric together – a completely fresh approach to shawl pins!

I know your brother usually works on agricultural equipment for prune Farmers in the south of France. Does he prefer the delicate work of jewelry making to the heavy work of repairing farm machinery?

Yes definitely, Simon loves the artistic work!

You're a knitter, and you've just started selling patterns. What's currently on your needles?

PLEASE NOTE SO FAR MY PATTERNS ARE ALL FREE !!!

I am on the first sleeve of Deco by Kate Davis using this lovely soft yarn.

A charity baby blanket is my current easy and portable project, and by next week I will most likely have cast on another shawl.

I'd like to end on a lighter note. Have you ever had to use a shawl pin for anything other than a shawl? They just seem like such handy things to have around. I had to ask.

Oh yes, always on my Austin Hoodie and Pole cardigans as a closure.
On a hat – come and have a look on our stand !
I have once used the stick to stir a cup of coffee, but the most unusual thing was to open a DVD drive !

Thank you, Nova Steel, and see you very very soon !
